Back in 2001 when Mad Mike Jones and Ryan Leyba busted the first Kiss Of Deaths, the industry was agog. How the hell did he do it? Nowadays, no trick repertoire is complete without a big, old KOD, and few Aussie riders can do them better than 2008 AFMX champion Kain Saul. So who better to get to show you guys how to master them than Sauly himself?
STEP 1
Before you start getting all excited about pulling out a Kiss Of Death, you need to make sure you have your Supermans down properly and you’re confident with them. The Kiss Of Death isn’t the easiest trick to learn. Maybe I’m a bit slow, but it took me a while to sort them out.
STEP 2
I’m gonna assume you’re hitting a 75ft ramp when you’re doing this, so approach the ramp in second gear at your normal speed. As you hit the ramp, lean over the front of the bike a little more than usual. This will help get you into position for when you have to lever your body out and upwards.
STEP 3
As I leave the ramp, I push off the bike with my feet, which does two things. It will loop the bike out and it’ll also help get your legs above your head. As your feet leave the pegs curl yourself into a ball so you can get into position quicker. Also, I always put my index finger on my clutch lever and use it as leverage to get back on to the bike at the end of the trick. Some people can complete Kiss Of Deaths without doing this, but I definitely find my method a lot easier.
STEP 4
So now I’ve pushed all my weight up over the front of the bars, and I lower my head towards the front mudguard and try and do a handstand on the bars. Don’t put your helmet straight down on to the front guard, otherwise it’ll smack you in the mouth and it’s not pretty! As you feel yourself hit the right position and feel your bike is pretty looped out, extend your curled legs so they’re nice and straight.
STEP 5
Alright, now it’s time to get back into the saddle, and this is where your clutch finger comes into play. Push down with your finger, and at the same time pull your feet back in towards your body. Both these movements will help drop your body back towards the bike, and will bring your machine back into line.
STEP 6
It’s almost time for landing, so keep your feet spread apart so they don’t hit the seat, then find the footpegs as quickly as you can. At the same time spot your landing and brace for the impact.
