Local hero Nick Franklin claimed a narrow victory over Australians Kain Saul and Steve Sommerfeld at the Red Bull FMX Battle in Wanganui, New Zealand on Dec 28, and were there to watch it all go down.
After qualifying and passing through the knock-out stages of the X-Fighters-style competition, Kain Saul had to go head-to-head against Nick Franklin with each rider having a 120-second run to throw down their biggest tricks for the judges. Eventually it was Franklin who came out on top narrowly beating the aussie visitor for the win.
"I went out and completed a pretty spot on run with all my biggest tricks; I thought it would have given me the win easily. I was a bit stunned." Kain Saul said. "Talking to the judges afterwards they said he got one extra jump in on his run; he rode the course a bit faster than I did."
In a classic trans-Tasman clash, Brisbane's Steve Sommerfeld went up against Kiwi Josh Thomson in the battle for third place, and just scraped by to claim the final podium spot.
The Red Bull FMX Battle was one of the best – if not THE best – Australasian FMX competition to go down in 2009. With an estimated 5000-6000 screaming locals cramming into the Cooks Garden, the inaugural competition organised by former Crusty Demon Mary Perkins on behalf of the Wanganui City Council was a raging success. We're already looking forward to next year's event!
