With just days remaining until gates drop on the opening round of the 2009 Australian Motocross Championship, riders cannot wait for the season to kick off at the Albury Wodonga Motorcycle Club on 4 and 5 April.
For reigning Pro Open Champion, Jay Marmont (Yamaha), pre-season preparation and practice was put on hold two weeks ago with the arrival of his first child, however despite sleepless nights, the Wollongong local has been putting in the hard yards to ensure he is in top form for the opening round.
“It’s definitely taken it’s toll and I’m glad that the original dates for the Series were put back a little bit and it wasn’t on 15 March as that’s when my baby girl Lila was born,” Marmont said.
“It’s been good but I’ve been trying to get back into a sleeping pattern and get a bit more riding and time under my belt.”
While things at home may have changed for Marmont, it seems his goals haven’t been too affected by the joys of parenthood.
“My main goal is to go out there and try to win as many races as I can, be consistent and try and take another Championship,” he said. “This year it’s also a lot more than that, it’s always harder to defend a Championship than going for your first one, and going out there this year there will be a few more riders that are going to be on their game. Cheyne Boyd is coming into the season uninjured, Todd Waters has found some serious speed lately and you’ve got Craig Anderson and Andrew McFarlane who have won many Australian Championships before and they know what they’ve got to do. I think this year it’ll be who can just stick in there and be consistent, but we’ll have to see what happens at the first few rounds.”
Running the number one plate this year, Marmont will be the man to beat, and doesn’t mind having a target on his back as the rest of the field battle it out for Championship glory.
“Yeah for sure I’ll have a target on my back with the number one plate, you always do, you’re the guy that everyone judges their speed with and if you’ve got the number one and they’re beating you it’s just as good as winning the race,” he said. “Not only do I have to go out there and win the race and the day, but I’ve got to protect that number one plate. Sometimes it can be a little bit too much but I like running the number one plate, it’s the best number to have on the track!”
With Australia’s best Motocross riders taking to the track in the Championship opener this is one event not to be missed.
