Gold Coast's Joe Sheppard has emphatically claimed the Freerider MX FMX Rider Of The Year Award after a solid fourth place at the Narrogin RevHeads.
Sheppard was the best of the non-flippers at what's regarded as the most prestigious FMX comp in Australia, and has pulled an unassailable lead over second-placed Robbie Adelberg and West Australian Josh Sheehan in the ROTY points chase.
Shep has put in huge amounts of effort this year to attend every event on the Australian freestyle calendar, and his dedication, coupled with his solid riding, has meant he is a much-deserved winner of the 2008 Rider Of The Year Award.
With just one round remaining for the 2009 season – the Red Bull FMX Battle in Wanganui, NZ on December 28 – Shep's 353-point buffer is too big to be overhauled. However, with just 40 points separating second from fifth on the points ladder, podium spots are still anyone's for the taking, and whoever decides to make the trip to the Land Of The Long White Cloud will be rewarded for their efforts.
On behalf of the Freerider MX crew, congratulations, Joe! You've been in outstanding form this year, and have been an inspiration to many.

ABOUT FREERIDER MX'S RIDER OF THE YEAR AWARD
FRMX's FMX Rider of the Year Award is to recognise the amount of dedication some FMX riders put in to attend the majority of events held around the country.
Here's how it works: after every FMX competition that's held throughout 2009 (excluding FMX Nationals and King Of The Coast) the riders who compete will score points depending on how they placed. The points breakdown for 2009 is like this: 1st - 25pts; 2nd - 22pts; 3rd - 20pts; 4th - 18pts; 5th - 16pts; 6th - 15pts; 7th - 14pts; 8th - 13pts; 9th - 12pts; 10th - 11pts, etc etc.
Now the number of down ramps and how much prize-money is offered to first place will determine how many "stars" each event will be worth. We will award one star for every down-ramp and one star for every $1000 the winner receives in prize-money. If an event has, say, two down-ramps and $2000 for the winner, it'll be a four-star event, and points will be multiplied four times. In this case, the winner will receive 100 points (25pts x 4 stars).
