Editor's Blog: The Mini SX

As you can probably imagine, getting this site up and running has taken most of my focus over the past couple of weeks. While we’re using a similar “back-end” as the old Freerider MX site, this new version has still taken a little while to get my head around. I’m slowly starting to get there now, but she’s been a slow process. It’s always hard to teach an old dog new tricks, haha.

This last weekend I headed to Melbourne for the Fox Racing Mini SX in Frankston. The event has been running for four years and always pulls massive crowds, and I promised the organisers I’d make the effort to come down and cover the first round of the 2009 championship. After all, we do sponsor it and I guess it would be good to go down and give the boys some support for all the hard work they’ve put in.

Every year the lads have been blessed with fine, hot weather and thousands of people lining the track 15-deep trying to witness the pit-bike legends carve up a BMX club track.
This year, however, it rained its guts out and the track was a mud-fest.

I felt really bad for the Southside Promotions guys – they’d poured their hearts and souls into making this event the best yet, but the rain kept a vast majority of the crowds at home. The 500 or so that still turned out to watch the boys race witnessed some awesome battles, particularly between NSW’s Ty Halliday and Tassy’s Brad Smith. And in a weird way, watching the riders tear around a partially submerged BMX track was a unique experience in its own right.

Unfortunately the dismal weather meant the FMX demo – featuring Cam Sinclair, Bilko, Matt Schubring and Joel Balchin – was cancelled, but Bilko, Balchy and Sincs still put in some hard yards around the track. Well, let me rephrase that: they TRIED to put in some hard yards. Bilko blew up two of his mates’ bikes in two laps and Sincs only finished one of his five races (with a third place) after constant bike dramas. Balchy was the only one who constantly fired all day, even winning a couple of races in the process! I think he was just as surprised as everyone else!

Luckily the Southside Promotions crew have a second round to this year’s championship in Shepparton on March 28, so they can hopefully make back some of the money they lost at Frankston.

I strongly recommend you head to Shep for this event and support the boys and the Mini SX. The organisers run a really tight ship and the mini-bike industry really needs events like this to keep it fizzing. Let’s hope the weather returns to its usual hot, fine self for the big day!

Hopefully I’ll see you there.
Until next time, stay safe.
